Beer Review #47: Woodchuck Pear Cider

Style: Cider

Menu description: Sweet, lightly carbonated.

ABV: 4%

Tasting notes: This has an extremely light flavor and a very light, crisp feel. You can taste the pear, but it’s faint. I can’t even say that this is terribly sweet. Compare it to Angry Orchard’s standard Apple Cider and you’d think the Woodchuck people are entirely unfamiliar with sugar. I actually don’t mind the lack of sugar or sweetness or even think it’s necessarily a bad thing, except for two problems. First, there’s almost no other flavor other than the hint of pear. If the pear was stronger, it would be fine. Second, the Woodchuck website claims that this is a very sweet cider and that has not been my experience any of the half dozen times I’ve tried it. All that said, it’s not really bad. It’s good for novice drinkers or anyone else who doesn’t want anything strong or heavy.

Beer Review #23: Ace Perry Hard Cider

Website description: It’s made from delicious apple and pear juices. We use champagne yeast in all our ciders and ferment for them 10-14 days. We then cold-filter 4 times and carbonate them before bottling or kegging. It is 5% alcohol by volume with a lovely pear nose and a smooth semi-sweet mouth feel with a dry finish.

ABV: 5%

My thoughts: This has a weird scent. It’s sort of a sickly sweet scent that almost smells like fruit at the very edge of ripeness. This is only the 2nd pear cider I’ve had and it couldn’t be more different. It’s got the perfect level of sweetness. The pear flavor is super strong! It’s not very carbonated and has a moderately clean finish. Pretty solid if you’re into ciders, but its not gonna win any converts if you aren’t a cider fan.

Number of times I’ve had it: 1

Rating: 3.5/5

Location: My friend Russell’s house
